The Challenge

Create a lesson that demonstrates the principles of constructive alignment by ensuring that learning outcomes, activities and assessment work together to support learner success with the use of AI.

My Approach

I designed a lesson that applies constructive alignment principles throughout the learning experience. Learning outcomes were used to guide content development, activity design and assessment planning, ensuring that each component supported the intended learning goals.

The project also explored the responsible use of AI within the learning design process, demonstrating how technology can support content development while maintaining pedagogical integrity. Particular attention was given to ensuring that learning activities required learners to demonstrate the same level of thinking expected by the intended learning outcomes and assessment tasks.

Deliverables

Learning Design Consideration

Particular attention was given to ensuring that learners had opportunities to engage with concepts, apply their understanding and demonstrate achievement of the intended outcomes. The lesson was designed to model good instructional practice by making the relationship between outcomes, activities and assessment visible throughout the learning experience. The lesson was designed to illustrate how alignment can improve learner experience and assessment validity.

Activity Example

Try it: Diagnose the AI output

Step 1: Read the prompt and output

Prompt:
Create a short activity to help new learning designers understand constructive alignment.

AI output:
Learners watch a short video explaining constructive alignment, then complete a matching activity where they connect each key term, learning outcome, learning activity and assessment, to its definition. They then write one sentence explaining why alignment matters.

Step 2: Diagnose the design

  • What learning outcome does this activity seem to support?

  • What information is missing from the prompt?

  • Does the output align with a higher-level outcome such as apply or evaluate? Why?

  • Would you accept the first output, adapt it yourself, or re-prompt?

  • In no more than 100 words, explain your decision.

Step 3: Consider pre-prompting

If you re-prompt, add relevant design information, such as learner level, intended outcome, required practice, and how learning should be assessed or reviewed.
